Manga Contest Frequently Asked Questions

What’s up with the “multiples of 4” rule?

Most booklets are created with the Saddle-Stitch binding method. This economical method uses printed sheets that are folded and nested one inside the other and then stapled through the fold line with wire staples. The staples pass through the folded crease from the outside and are clinched between the centermost pages.

Pages Must Be in Multiples of Four

Folding any sheet of paper in half will create four separate panels. Because saddle-stitched booklets are constructed entirely of folded sheets, the page count must therefore be a multiple of four.

Since each folded sheet joined within the finished booklet will form four pages of the booklet, it is not possible to create a 7-page, 10-page, or 25-page saddle-stitched booklet. The only feasible page counts for saddle-stitched booklets are 4 pages, 8 pages, 12 pages, 16 pages, 20 pages, 24 pages, 28 pages, 32 pages and so on. Even if a page within the booklet is blank, it still counts as a page.

What has to be on the title page?

The title page just states the title of the manga and the author/artist’s name.It can also list any copyright info and the url to your deviantArt/Etsy, web page, etc. (as long as the url doesn’t connect to adult/offensive content).

How many entries are allowed per artist/team? Are members of a team allowed to do another entry with a different team mate?

You can enter as many times as you want, within reason. You can also enter with different team configurations.

What is SacAnime’s intention for the submitted comics? By signing the media release form, are artists voiding all rights towards their original comics, regardless of whether or not they have placed as a winner? What are the exact rights the artists have towards their comics? Is SacAnime at any point seeking comics to publish for financial purposes? If so, is this form denying any sort of compensation towards the artist?

SacAnime plans on publishing all of the manga entries online and offering it to fans without charge. SacAnime reserves the right to print the winners in comic form and then charge for that to help pay for the printing costs. If SacAnime ever does decide to monetize the contest, any artists/writers involved would be compensated. SacAnime doesn’t hold any rights to any of the manga creations, besides the above mentioned online publishing. The entire purpose of the contest is to feature something cool on SacAnime’s website and create goodwill. Stealing the work of artists/writers would sabotage that goodwill effort.

How do I fill out the media release form?

If you don’t have the ability to fill out the form digitally, you can print it out, sign it, then scan it and send it to us (with your entry). If you don’t have a scanner, you can also take a picture of it with your phone and send that in.
